Affordable Travel Guide to Flights

Your Guide to Flights, Airports and Airlines

Flights

It only lasted four months; the first known commercial airline that carried paying passengers gave up the ghost four months after its inaugural flight, but it paved the way for the future of flights and airlines that traverse the globe. That was January 1, 1914, and the airline was St. Petersburg-Tampa Airboat Line. Nod your head in thanks every time you board airplanes that enable you to take flights to the destinations of your dreams, for vacation, personal or business travel.

The Glory Days of Airline Travel

We tend to take airline flights for granted. Time was, for example, that if a relative in a far off land died, we would not be able to get there in time to attend their funeral. Ships took a week or more to cross the Atlantic, and trains were both slow and notoriously late. We’ve come a long way since 1914, and airline flights have evolved with the times. Remember when it used to be a big event to fly somewhere? You’d dress up in your Sunday best and board airline flights in cumbersome planes; it was all very formal. These days, airlines have had to step up security, cut costs where they can, and the romance of flying has leveled off.

Most people still look forward to flying because it signifies a break from routine. Being somewhere else for a while, seeing new and different things, re-energizing life. Perhaps visiting friends and family, relaxing on a tropical beach, or shaking hands in person (not on Skpe!) with the person who just made a lucrative deal with your business. Despite our virtual world, there is nothing quite like being there, face to face. In fact, maybe because so much of our modern world is virtual, we long to make human contact. Flights are the gift that allows us to touch another person who lives far away from our world.

Once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been, and there you will always long to return. — Leonardo DaVinci

Flight Data You Want to Know

The biggest question we hear: is flying safe? The world of flights is a safe, efficient way to travel, and the fastest option you’ll find. With computer technology, it’s entirely possible to book a flight and be in another place in a matter of hours. And that’s why, even with enhanced security and other hassles, air travel still tops our get-away lists. N fact, there are places that it would be almost impossible to reach if you didn’t fly.

How safe is air travel? For example, in 2001, there were only 373 fatalities from 18 scheduled flights around the world. When you consider that each year, roughly 31 million flights go up and down, that’s a minute percentage. Indeed, there are 10,000,000 flights per year in the USA alone. In 2007, 4.8 billion passengers flew on aircraft, together with 88.5 million metric tones (97,554,551 US tons) of cargo. By contrast, in the USA alone, in 2010, 32,885 people died in car crashes, not to mention the additional 2.3 million who were injured. And when you think about it, most fatal car accidents occur within 25 miles of home, and people travel much farther on aircraft; that proves how safe air travel really is.

What Goes Up, Must Land!

The entire globe is dotted with places for aircraft to land, from mud airstrips in fields, to STOL (short take-off and landing) airports such as Toronto’s Billy Bishop Airport that handles only smaller commercial aircraft, to the likes of London (Heathrow), capable of handling multiple jumbo-jets on a series of runways at any given time. In fact, depending upon how it is calculated, Heathrow stands as the busiest airport in the world. It’s flight central!

The Service without the Crowds

Hate busy airports? There are almost always alternative airports in larger metropolitan areas, and often a few smaller airports within short distance. For example, Toronto’s major facility, Lester B. Pearson International Airport (served by all major airlines), is supported by its downtown airport, the aforementioned Billy Bishop airport (served by Air Canada, and the commuter airline, Porter Airlines), and within relatively short driving distance are also Hamilton, Waterloo and London airports that service local and international flights within Ontario, Canada, and beyond. If you prefer a less frenetic pace, and want to board your plane less stressed, there are ample alternative flights from smaller airports that will gel with your requirements.

Speaking of alternative airports, most of us live within reasonable distance of an international border, and it may be that the country right next door can offer cheaper flights, especially within its own borders. Live in Vancouver? Maybe a flight out of Washington State will involve cheap airfare if you are heading down to Los Angeles, for instance. The same could apply if you are traveling from, say, Austria; perhaps airfares might be cheaper if you fly out of Switzerland instead. Don’t worry; we’ll help you figure that out. Leave the digging to us and we’ll find the ways and means that you can travel affordably.

In our pages, you’ll read about all of the major international (and busiest!) airports in the world, like Atlanta, Chicago O’Hare, Haneda in Tokyo, Charles De Gaulle in Paris, Hong Kong, Amsterdam and many more. And we’ll provide you with literally thousands of less bustling alternatives that suit your travel needs. Affordable Travel is about keeping you informed about your options for flights and travel.

Where can an airlines flight take you? As the global village has shrunk, the frequency of air travel has grown. That might sound like an oxymoron, but it’s true. With points and loyalty rewards programs seat sales, and discount airlines, travel has never been more affordable. Our plan is to help you stretch your travel budget to the maximum! Because if you can get two vacations instead of just one out of your travel dollars, that’s going to make you happy!
