Safety & Security

Remember back in the 1960s when the last day of school brought forth good-byes like, “Have a great Summer!”? Now, it’s “Have a safe summer.” What happened? Is the global nanny state undermining our inherent right to have a great trip or a fun summer? Certainly there are criminal elements that seem to be more prevalent than they were in the innocence of the 1960s, and world terrorism has resulted in much more heightened airport security, but are we wearing seatbelts for a reason? If our plane happens to go down, will a mere seatbelt save our lives?

Part of the reason for enhanced safety and security measures in the travel business boils down to one issue: insurance. The cost of insurance of any kind is high, but claims may be denied of negligence can be proven. Still, there is no reason for rude security personnel when you go through the airport screening gates, or at customs inspection stations. These people need to remember that we are mostly traveling for business or pleasure, and the real criminals among us may be madly polite. We are all paying the price for increased safety and security.

What tends to be overlooked by travelers is that accidents happen. No matter how careful you, your airline or your resort management is, stuff can happen beyond our control. There are ways to be sensible, to stay safe in dangerous places, and to protect yourself in risky situations. That’s what this section of our Travelers’ Information department is about. Our aim is to keep you abreast of trends in safety and security for travelers, to let you know what places are not safe to visit, and how to make the best of your vacation or other trip while still enjoying yourself and ensuring your well-being.

In this section, you will learn the most important and pertinent information about:

  • security at airports (and how to cope with it)
  • protecting yourself (check out our article about safety for female travelers)
  • local firearms laws and policies
  • keeping your valuables safe when you are away from home
  • safety in specific countries or regions (read about safety in South America)
  • leaving your home alone; how to ensure your home looks loved-in when you’re away

Safety can be as simple as signs that warn of rogue waves and high tides, or sharks and rough waters, but it’s also hugely about common sense, and unfortunately people excited about a vacation sometimes leave that at home. Be aware, be safe and still have fun with out great tips and articles for a safe, happy holiday.
