Affordable Travel Guide to Vacation Savings: Phone Calls

Save money by avoiding hotel long-distance fees

Vacation Savings: Phone Calls

All hotels and other accommodations charge for long-distance phone calls. Some also charge for local calls. The long-distance rates tend to be significantly higher than the area phone companies charge and you can run up a huge bill even if you just call home for five minutes in the evening.

What are your alternatives? Sure, you can use your cellphone, but roaming rates are often very expensive. There is a cheap, convenient alternative: pre-paid phone cards.

These cards, ranging from $5 and up, buy you long-distance time on the phone. The rates are generally very low, sometimes as cost-effective as 5 cents a minute, or less. The cards are available everywhere: drug stores, convenience stores, gas stations, supermarkets, and more. They can be bought with cash, credit or debit card, or travelers’ checks, and in whatever denomination you need. If you want $50 worth, you can combine the pre-set value of individual cards to equal that amount.

It may be smartest, however, to buy your long-distance phone card at your destination, not before you leave home, because phone systems vary globally. If you purchase the card locally, you can be sure it will function within the area phone system where you are staying. If you do use a pre-paid long-distance phone card, it may be smart to use it up before you return home in case the reverse applies, and it cannot be used in your home-base location.

So, go ahead and call your mom from the majesty of Niagara Falls and let her hear the thunder of the water; if you do it using a pre-paid long-distance phone card, it will be an inexpensive call for you and a thrill for her. It’s a cheap way to stay in touch when you are on vacation or away on business.
